Electronics Clean Booth Project
This electronics clean booth project was designed for a precision electronics assembly and inspection facility in Penang, Malaysia. The client needed a local clean working area for PCB inspection, component assembly, electronics testing, repair work, and clean material staging inside an existing production hall.
Unlike a full modular cleanroom, this project uses a softwall clean booth structure. The booth is built with aluminum profiles, transparent PVC strip curtains, ceiling-mounted FFU units, bright LED lighting, ESD workbenches, wire shelving racks, PCB trays, microscope inspection stations, and mobile material carts. It provides a practical clean area for key production processes without requiring a large fixed cleanroom renovation.
The clean booth was designed to be bright, open, and easy to operate. Transparent soft walls allow supervisors to observe the process from outside, while the FFU and HEPA filtration system helps create a cleaner local environment for sensitive electronics work. The layout keeps the working area organized and avoids unnecessary crowding.

Project Background
The client’s existing electronics workshop already had production benches, testing equipment, and material storage areas, but some key operations required better particle control and a cleaner local environment. PCB inspection, fine component assembly, and repair operations were sensitive to dust, uncontrolled airflow, and poor workstation organization.
Building a full cleanroom for the entire production hall was not necessary for this process. The client needed a smaller, faster, and more flexible solution that could be installed inside the current factory without major civil construction. For this reason, STJh Cleanroom recommended an electronics clean booth solution.
The final clean booth provides a controlled local clean area for several workstations. It allows operators to perform microscope inspection, PCB handling, component assembly, and testing in a cleaner and more organized space while keeping the surrounding production hall unchanged.
Client Pain Points
No local clean area: Sensitive PCB inspection and component handling were previously performed in a general workshop environment.
Full cleanroom construction was not necessary: The client only needed cleanliness control for key workstations, not the entire factory.
Limited installation time: The production area needed to stay operational, so the solution had to be installed with less disruption.
Dust and particle risk: PCB boards, small electronic components, and inspection tasks required better protection from airborne particles.
Workstation organization: Benches, microscopes, PCB trays, testing tools, and material carts needed a clearer layout.
Process visibility: Supervisors needed to observe work inside the clean booth without entering frequently.
Clean Booth Solution
STJh Cleanroom designed a softwall electronics clean booth based on the client’s available workshop space, workstation quantity, required cleanliness level, electronics workflow, and material handling needs. The booth uses a lightweight aluminum frame and transparent PVC strip curtains to create a visible and flexible clean working area.
Ceiling-mounted FFU units with HEPA filters provide clean air supply for the booth. Bright LED lighting supports detailed inspection and assembly work. ESD workbenches, microscope stations, PCB trays, wire shelving racks, and mobile carts were arranged inside the booth to support daily production.
The clean booth structure makes it easier for the client to upgrade only the critical work area, instead of investing in a large fixed cleanroom. It is suitable for electronics factories that need local cleanliness improvement for inspection, assembly, repair, or testing processes.
Key Systems
1. Aluminum Frame Structure
The clean booth uses an aluminum profile frame. This structure is lightweight, stable, and suitable for fast installation inside an existing production hall. The frame also supports FFU units, lighting, softwall curtains, workstations, and internal accessories.
Lightweight aluminum profile structure
Fast installation inside existing factories
Stable support for FFU units and lighting
Flexible size design according to workstation layout
2. Transparent PVC Softwall System
Transparent PVC strip curtains were used to form the booth enclosure. This design allows the clean area to remain visible from outside while providing separation from the surrounding workshop. The softwall structure is also easier to adjust than a fixed hardwall room.
Clear PVC strip curtain enclosure
Good visibility for supervision
Practical access for operators and material carts
Suitable for local clean area upgrades
3. FFU And HEPA Filtration System
The clean booth is equipped with top-mounted FFU units and HEPA filters. The system supplies filtered air into the booth and helps reduce airborne particles around the working area. FFU quantity can be adjusted according to booth size, target cleanliness level, and process requirements.
Ceiling-mounted FFU units
HEPA filter clean air supply
Suitable for ISO 7–ISO 8 local clean areas
Flexible configuration according to booth size
4. ESD Workstation System
The electronics clean booth includes ESD-safe workbenches with teal anti-static work surfaces. These benches are used for PCB assembly, small component handling, microscope inspection, and electronics repair work.
ESD workbenches for electronics assembly
Anti-static work surfaces
Organized tool and component placement
Suitable for PCB handling and repair work
5. Microscope Inspection Area
Microscope stations and task lamps were arranged inside the booth for detailed PCB checking and component inspection. The bright lighting and controlled clean environment help operators work more accurately on small electronic parts.
Microscope inspection benches
Adjustable task lamps and ring lights
Clear work area for fine inspection
Better visibility for small component handling
6. PCB Tray And Material Storage System
Wire shelving racks and mobile carts were used for PCB trays, parts containers, and temporary material staging. This makes the internal workflow clearer and reduces unnecessary movement inside the booth.
Metal wire shelving racks
PCB trays and black storage bins
Mobile carts for material transfer
Organized clean material staging
7. Lighting System
Bright LED lighting was installed inside the clean booth to support electronics assembly and inspection. The lighting layout helps reduce shadows on workbenches and improves visibility for microscope and manual operations.
Bright LED ceiling lighting
Task lighting for inspection benches
Clear visibility for PCB assembly
Comfortable lighting for daily operation
Problems Solved for the Client
| Problem | Clean Booth Solution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sensitive electronics work was exposed to general workshop air | A softwall clean booth with FFU and HEPA filtration was installed | Cleaner local environment for PCB handling and inspection |
| Full cleanroom construction was too much for the actual process | A local clean booth was used instead of renovating the whole workshop | Lower project complexity and faster deployment |
| Workstations and material trays were not organized clearly | ESD benches, wire shelves, and mobile carts were planned inside the booth | Better workflow and cleaner workstation management |
| Operators needed better lighting for small component work | LED ceiling lights and task lamps were installed | Improved visibility for microscope inspection and assembly |
| Supervisors needed to observe the process from outside | Transparent PVC strip curtains were used for the booth enclosure | Easier process observation without frequent booth entry |
| The client needed a flexible clean area for future changes | Aluminum frame and softwall structure were selected | Easier adjustment than a permanent hardwall cleanroom |
Project Result
After completion, the client received an electronics clean booth system of approximately 45–65㎡. The booth provides a local clean working environment for PCB assembly, microscope inspection, component handling, electronics testing, repair work, and material staging.
The project improved the cleanliness of key workstations without changing the entire factory layout. Operators can work inside a cleaner and brighter controlled area, while supervisors can observe the process through the transparent softwall curtains.
Compared with a full fixed cleanroom, this clean booth solution offers faster installation, lower construction impact, easier adjustment, and better suitability for local clean area upgrades in electronics manufacturing.
